Our background

Barts Health NHS Trust was created on 1 April 2012 following the merger of Barts and The London NHS Trust, Newham University Hospital NHS Trust and Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust.

In 2011, an Outline Business Case (OBC) for our proposed merger was approved by the three legacy Trust boards and NHS London. Read our original summary prospectus: A vision for of future healthcare for local people.

Our clinicians also produced a Health and Healthcare benefits document which outlined some of the broad range of improvements that could be made from our merger, and how they could be delivered, whilst keeping services sensitive to local needs. Following an extensive 16-week stakeholder engagement programme and decision-making process in December 2011, a Full Business Case (FBC) was then approved by the three legacy Trust boards, the two commissioning clusters (NHS East London and The City and NHS outer north east London) and NHS London. In February 2012, the Department of Health Transaction Board and the NHS Co-operation and Competition Panel (CCP) recommended to the Secretary of State for Health that the merger should proceed.

Following consideration of all the evidence and recommendations, the Secretary of State for Health approved the merger in March 2012, with the new Trust – Barts Health - established on 1 April 2012. Read the press release announcing the approval.
