The Unit is based on the Ground Floor, Kenton and Lucas Wing. No appointment or referral is necessary. Patients are seen in order of urgency. The opening hours for the unit are Monday to Friday 8am-4pm. The last patient is booked into the unit at 3.30pm.

Please note: it may be necessary to close the unit earlier if the deratment is very busy to allow the unit to close at 4pm. This will be at the discretion of the emergency nurse practitoner.

Find out about disabled access to the Unit here.

Whipps Cross

The Minor Injuries Unit is located at the entrance to the Emergency Department on the ground floor in Red Zone.

The Minor Injuries Unit is staffed by experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Accident and Emergency (A&E) nursing staff. The Emergency Nurse Practitioner will have spent a number of years in an Accident and Emergency Department and have undertaken further extensive training in the management of minor injuries.

After you book in, you will be assessed as soon as one of the nurses becomes available. The nurse will also be able to initiate treatments such as pain killers and order x-ray investigations if they are required. Depending on your condition you may have a further wait to be reviewed by an emergency nurse practitioner. Our wait can be unpredictable especially if a number of patients book in at the same time but you will be advised of approximate waiting times on arrival.

Emergency dental care

Our dental emergency clinic is currently closed and patients are advised to contact NHS 111 to find commissioned local general dental practices who can provide this care.

We do not take direct referrals from practices to the dental hospital. Patients with severe, visible facial swelling which is causing difficulty in breathing should go to their nearest Accident and Emergency department.

On evenings, weekends and public holidays, residents of the City of London, London Borough of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Waltham Forest can contact NHS 111 for free advice and help to find emergency treatment. Where appropriate, you may be directed to a dental surgery for treatment on the same day or next day.
